Shipping Temperature-Sensitive Freight: A Reefer Checklist

From setting the right temperature to pre-cooling the product, here's what to confirm before refrigerated freight hits the road.

Yellow semi truck hauling a refrigerated trailer at a truck stop

Refrigerated (reefer) trailers hold a set temperature for the whole trip, but the cold chain starts before the truck arrives. A clear plan protects product quality from pickup to delivery.

Before booking

  • Confirm the required temperature or range, in writing
  • Decide between continuous cooling and cycle mode
  • Share the commodity, weight and pallet count

At pickup

  • Pre-cool product to the shipping temperature
  • Check that the trailer has been pre-cooled
  • Load to allow airflow around and under the pallets
  • Record the set point on the bill of lading

Your Patel Freight contact will match the load with a carrier running suitable refrigerated equipment and keep you updated through delivery.
