When Your Freight Needs a Flatbed or Step Deck

Too tall, too wide or loaded by crane? Open-deck equipment may be the answer. Here's how flatbeds, step decks and permitted loads compare.

Flatbed semi truck loaded with building materials

Not every load fits through a trailer door. Building materials, steel, machinery and oversized equipment often move on open-deck trailers instead.

Flatbed

A standard flatbed has a 48–53 ft deck and is loaded from the sides, top or rear by forklift or crane. Freight is secured with straps, chains and tarps as needed.

Step deck

A step deck has a lower main deck, which allows taller freight to stay within legal height limits without special permits in many cases.

Oversize and permitted loads

Freight wider than 8.5 ft, or over legal height or weight limits, typically needs permits — and sometimes route surveys and escorts. Requirements vary by state, so plan ahead and share exact dimensions early.
